Fee - Kanryo

Japanese: 勘料 - かんりょう
Fee - Kanryo
In the Middle Ages, rice fees and fees were paid in exchange for exemption from inspection. From the Heian period onwards, when land inspections were carried out in provincial government territories and manors, requests for exemption from inspection were often made by local temples and shrines, influential village headmen, etc. In such cases, the rice and fees collected by the kokushi or feudal lord as compensation for approving the requests from the local area were called kanryomame (rice tax) and kanryosen (money tax). It was a type of miscellaneous tax and sometimes became the share of the inspector of fields. Later, kanryo was sometimes collected under the pretext of inspection, regardless of whether inspections were carried out or not.
