Mutsumi [village]

Japanese: むつみ[村]

A village in Abu District, northern Yamaguchi Prefecture. Population 2,484 (1995). It is located in the mountains on the northern backbone of the Chugoku Mountains, with the Zoumeki River, a tributary of the Abu River, flowing south through the center. The Sekishu Kaido road that runs from Hagi to Tsuwano passes through the village, and in the Edo period, Kibe had a magistrate's office, a station, and a market. Although the area is covered with forests and fields, the main industry is agriculture, with rice, vegetables, tobacco, poultry, and beef cattle being cultivated, and radishes are a specialty product. Yoshibe Hachiman Shrine and Mure Shrine, both located on the top of Kibe, were revered as the guardian deities of cattle and horses during the Edo period.

山口県北部，阿武郡の村。人口2484(1995)。中国山地脊梁部北側の山間にあり，中央を阿武川の支流蔵目喜（ぞうめき）川が南流する。萩から津和野に至る石州街道が通じ，江戸時代，吉部（きべ）には代官所や駅が置かれ，市も開かれた。林野が広いが，農業が中心で米作，野菜やタバコの栽培，養鶏，肉牛の飼育などが行われ，特産にダイコンなどがある。吉部上に鎮座する吉部八幡宮と牟礼神社は，江戸時代，牛馬の守護神として崇敬された。
