1803‐65 English landscape gardener, architect, engineer, and businessman. Born in Bedfordshire, he was the chief gardener for Chatsworth, the Duke of Devonshire's residence. He developed an ingenious method of attaching glass to an iron frame to build the Great Conservatory (1840) in the gardens, and succeeded in prefabricating cast iron structures at Lily House (1849). The Crystal Palace (1851) was the culmination of these techniques. In addition to designing city parks and country houses, he is known for his diverse activities, including as a member of the House of Commons, managing railways, and publishing newspapers and gardening magazines.
