The Luo are a Nilolan ethnic group living mainly in Kenya, from South Sudan to Tanzania. They speak the Nilolan language. Their population is estimated at over 3 million. They fish, raise cattle, and farm, but today farming has replaced pasture farming as the most important form of agriculture. The basic unit of social life is the polygamous family, which constitutes the homestead, and each level of the local community is a segmented society with a dominant patrilineal descent group at the center. The elders are at the center of politics, but before British colonization, some local groups (Pinni, Oganda) were establishing chiefdoms. Their worldview is centered on the dead and spirits called Juogi, and sacrifices are mainly directed to these beings. Religious practitioners include fortune tellers, a kind of sorcerer (Jabiro), and spirit mediums (Jajuogi), who play important roles. Witchcraft is also important, and they use poison and the evil eye. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
