"Masquerade" (Lermontov)

In 1832, he transferred to the Imperial Guard Academy in St. Petersburg, where he spent two years in debauchery. In 1834, he graduated as a second lieutenant and began to frequent the upper classes of St. Petersburg. He returned to writing and wrote the Othello-esque tragedy Un Ballo (1835). The play was not allowed to be performed because it so frankly depicted the hypocrisy of upper class society.
