Independent Television Authority. A public corporation established in 1954 for commercial television broadcasting in the UK. It has studios and transmitting facilities, but does not produce its own programs, leaving it to program production companies. It has the duty and authority to regulate and supervise program scheduling, content, advertising, etc. In 1972, it was renamed the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) when it was added to the management of commercial radio.
