Born: November 6, 1880, Klagenfurt, Austria
[Died] April 15, 1942. Geneva, Switzerland. Austrian novelist. He left the military career and studied engineering at university, and later logic and experimental psychology. He published the novel Die Verwirrungen des Zöglings Törleß (1906) (The Perplexities of the Cadet Törles), which caused a stir and led him to decide to become a writer. He also published the short story collection Die Vereinigungen (1911), Drei Frauen (Three Women) (1924), and the play Die Schwärmer (The Dreamers) (1920), as well as the full-length novel Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften (The Man Without Qualities) (1930-1943). This life's work, which later became a worldwide topic, continued to be written after the author fled to Switzerland in 1938, but was left unfinished due to his sudden death from illness.
