A powerful family in southwest Scotland. They were recognized as chiefs in the 14th century, and became Lord Kennedy in the 15th century and Earl of Cassilis in the 16th century. Gilbert, the 2nd Earl (died 1527), was assassinated in a complicated power struggle among the nobles. His son, Gilbert, the 3rd Earl (17?-58), was a vassal of James V, and was captured in 1542 at Solway Moss against Henry VIII's army. After his release, he became pro-English. In 54 he became Lord Chancellor of the Exchequer. In 58 he accompanied Mary Stuart to France for her wedding, and died of an illness in Dieppe on the way back. His son, Gilbert, the 4th Earl (41?-76), served as chamberlain to Henry II in France, and after Mary Stuart's return, he fought against anti-Queenie nobles as a supporter of the Queen in his own country, but was defeated and imprisoned, but was appointed Privy Councillor in 1571. His son, John, 5th Earl (67?-1615), served as First Lord of the Exchequer, and his nephew, John, 6th Earl (1595?-1668), a Presbyterian aristocrat, served as a Privy Councillor and was one of the committee members who negotiated an alliance with Charles II, the Prince of Wales, in exile in 1649-50. The 7th Earl (46?-1701) was deprived of his legal rights for rebelling against the rule of Lauderdale, but was appointed Privy Councillor and Lord Treasurer after the Glorious Revolution.
