A mammal of the Sciuridae family in the order Rodentia (illustration). It is also known by other names such as Bandori, Nobusuma, Jobsuma, Moma, and Flying Squirrel. A type of large, gliding, arboreal squirrel with a flying membrane formed by the skin stretching between its front and hind legs and the sides of its body. The flying membrane also extends between its forelimbs and cheeks, and between its hind legs and tail. The flying membrane is retracted to the side of its body when not gliding, making it unnoticeable, and it looks similar to a squirrel. Its dorsal body color is gray-brown, reddish brown, or blackish brown, with large white spots extending from its cheeks to above its eyes. Its ventral side is white. It has large eyes and sharp claws on its hands and feet.

齧歯（げつし）目リス科の哺乳類（イラスト）。バンドリ，ノブスマ，ヨブスマ，モマ，モモンガなどの別名がある。前･後肢と体側との間に皮膚がのびてできた飛膜をもつ大型の滑空する樹上生のリスの一種。飛膜は，前肢とほおとの間，後肢と尾との間にもはる。飛膜は滑空時以外には体側に引き込まれて目だたず，姿はリスに似る。体色は背側が灰褐色，赤褐色あるいは黒褐色で，ほおから目の上にかけて大きな白斑がある。腹側は白色。目が大きく，手足には鋭いかぎづめをもつ。
