Gujarat [State] (English spelling)

A state in the westernmost part of India, facing the Arabian Sea. It has an area of 196,000 km2 and a population of 41.31 million (1991). The state capital is Gandhinagar. Topographically, it is divided into the Kutch and Kathiawar peninsulas, the Greater and Lesser Ranns of Kutch, and the Eastern Alluvial Plain. Both peninsulas were once islands, but became peninsulas due to uplift and sedimentation in the hinterland. The origin of the Ranns of Kutch is due to the half-landification of the former seabed on an anticline structure caused by marine regression, the blocking of the inflow of the Indus River branch due to a fault caused by the great earthquake of 1819, and evaporation due to the dry climate.

インド西端部の州。アラビア海に面する。面積19万6000km2，人口4131万(1991)。州都はガンディナガル。地形的には，カッチ，カーティアーワール両半島，大･小両カッチ湿地，東部沖積平野に分かれる。両半島部はかつては島であったが，隆起作用と後背地域での堆積作用により半島となった。カッチ湿地の成因は，海退作用による背斜構造上の旧海底の半陸地化，1819年の大地震時の断層によるインダス川分流の流入阻止，乾燥気候による蒸発にある。
