A passerine bird of the family Muscicapidae and subfamily Muscicapinae (illustration). It breeds in eastern Siberia and Sakhalin, and winters in southern China, Indochina, Borneo, and other places. It is a migratory bird that passes through Japan during its spring and autumn migration. It is about 13 cm long, and the male has black upperparts and white spots next to the eyes and on the shoulders. The underside is reddish-orange. The female has brown upperparts and a paler red underside. Like other robins, it preys on small insects in the air. In the Edo period, it was once kept as a pet under the name Kotsubame (little swallow). The name Mugimaki (winter swallow) is said to have been given because they migrated in large numbers in the autumn around the time of wheat sowing, but this is not clear.

スズメ目ヒタキ科ヒタキ亜科の鳥（イラスト）。東シベリアとサハリンで繁殖し，中国南部，インドシナ，ボルネオなどで越冬する。日本には旅鳥として春秋の渡りの途中に通過する。全長約13cm，雄は体の上面が黒く，眼の横と肩に白斑がある。下面は赤橙色。雌の上面は褐色で下面の赤みも淡い。他のヒタキ類と同様，空中で小昆虫を捕食する。江戸時代には小燕（こつばめ）の名で飼われていたことがある。ムギマキの名は，秋の麦まきのころに多く渡ってきたのでつけられたらしいが，はっきりしたことはわからない。
