The task of trampling autumn-sown wheat, barley, etc., once or several times in winter. This is also called compaction. In addition to the effect of preventing frost damage by compacting the base of the plant and the surrounding soil that has been lifted by frost pillars, compacting the wheat sprouts is said to have the effect of preventing them from growing too tall and increasing their cold resistance. This task is necessary in areas with light soil such as volcanic ash, but is rarely done these days to save on labor. However, some places are still seeing results by using methods such as a tractor to pull the roller.

秋播(ま)きのコムギ、オオムギなどを冬季に一または数回踏みつける作業。踏圧(とうあつ)ともいう。霜柱で持ち上がった株もとや周りの土を踏み固め、凍霜害を防ぐ効果のほかに、ムギの芽を踏圧することにより徒長を防ぎ、耐寒性を増す効果があるとされる。土質の軽い火山灰地などでは必要な作業であるが、現在では省力のためにほとんど行われない。しかしトラクターでローラーを牽引(けんいん)するなどの方法で効果をあげているところもある。
