The social encyclicals are written in a variety of formats, including those dealing with religious, moral, and social issues, but those dealing with social and economic issues are called "social encyclicals." These encyclicals are the most important sources of information for understanding Catholic social thought. Among the social encyclicals written before the Second Vatican Council, the two most famous ones were Leo XIII's "Rerum novarum" (May 15, 1891, on labor issues) and Pius XI's "Quadragesimo anno" (May 15, 1931, on the restructuring of the social and economic order). Other famous modern encyclicals include Leo XIII's Providentissimus Deus (November 19, 1893, Bible), Pius X's Pascendi Dominici Gregis (September 7, 1907, Modernist Errors), Benedict XV's Pacem Dei Munus (May 25, 1920, Peace), Pius XI's Divini Illius Magistri (December 31, 1929, Christian Education), Casti Connubii (December 31, 1930, Christian Marriage), and Pius XII's Mystici Corporis (June 29, 1943, Mystical Body of Christ). The following have been issued from around the time of the Second Vatican Council to the present day. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Quadragesimo anno" are listed below.
