1869-1958 (Meiji 2-Showa 33)
The first head of the Tate school of kouta. Her real name was Tachinaka. She was born in Tokyo and studied under Miyako Ichiina. Ichiina was a beloved disciple of Miyako Ichiyu, who was the leading tayu of Itchu-bushi after the death of the 8th Itchu, and left behind many kouta songs. She later became the second wife of the 2nd Kiyomoto Umeyoshi. Naka learned kouta, Itchu-bushi, and Kiyomoto from her teacher, and became a geisha in Yanagibashi under the name Konui at the age of 18, but later changed her name to Kocho and returned to Shinbashi. She retired from prostitution in 1907, but during that time she was a famous geisha and made a name for herself in the streets, gaining the acquaintances of many notable people, including Ito Hirobumi.
