Born: September 17, 1868 in Rostock [Died] May 6, 1956. A German orientalist who pioneered new fields in Islamic studies, linguistics, and Turk studies. He obtained his doctorate in 1890, and became a professor at the University of Königsberg in 1903, rector at the University of Halle, and rector at the University of Berlin in 1932. His main work is Geschichte der arabischen Literatur (Catalogue of Arabic Literature) (2 volumes, 1898-1902).
