Archean eon

This refers to the older period when the Precambrian era is divided into the old and new, and is also called the Archean era. It corresponds to the period from the formation of the Earth about 4.6 billion years ago to about 2.5 billion years ago. The strata formed during the Archean era are called the Archean Realm. The first life was born through a process of non-biological chemical evolution. The oldest fossils known are those of fungi and algae that appear to be blue-green algae, found in strata dating back over 3 billion years. The strata contain many volcanic rocks, but have been transformed into metamorphic rocks such as schist by repeated crustal movements, and are distributed across the world's shields along with the Proterozoic strata.

先カンブリア時代を新旧に二分したときの古い時代をさし、太古代ともいう。約46億年前の地球の形成より約25億年前までの期間に相当する。始生代に形成された地層を始生界という。非生物的な化学進化の過程を経て最初の生命が誕生する。最古の化石として、菌類、藍藻(らんそう)らしい藻類の化石が約三十数億年前の地層より知られている。地層には火山岩類が多いが、何回もの地殻変動を受けて結晶片岩などの変成岩となっており、原生代の地層とともに世界の楯状地(たてじょうち)に分布する。
