U Thong (English spelling)

Japanese: ウートーン（英語表記）U Thong

An ancient ruin in central-western Thailand. Located about 100km northwest of Bangkok. It is one of the oldest ruins in terms of Thai history, and based on the style of the excavated terracotta reliefs (Buddhist monks holding bowls, etc.), it is thought to date back to the Funan Kingdom (1st to 7th centuries), which flourished in Indochina. However, the remains that have been excavated are mainly from the Dbaravati Kingdom (6th to 11th centuries), and the remains of the capital that still exist here are also considered to date back to the period of that kingdom, ruled by the Mon people. The remains of the capital are roughly oval-shaped, long from north to south (about 1.7km), and were surrounded by a moat at the time.

タイ中西部にある古代遺跡。バンコクの北西約100kmに位置する。タイ史を考える上での最古の遺跡の一つで，出土するテラコッタ製の浮彫(鉢をかかえた仏僧等)の様式から，インドシナに栄えていた扶南国(1～7世紀)時代にまでさかのぼると考えられた。しかし，出土する遺品はおもにドバーラバティ王国(6～11世紀)時代のもので，この地に現存する都の跡もモン族によるその王国時代のものとみなされている。都の跡は，ほぼ南北に長い(約1.7km)楕円形をなし，当時は周囲が水濠で囲まれていた。
