Black-tailed prairie dog

...The name "dog" comes from the sharp voice they make when danger approaches. The representative species that lives in the Great Plains in central North America, the black-tailed prairie dog C. ludovicianus (illustration), and five other species, are distributed from Montana to Mexico. All species are very similar.
