Müllerian duct

In vertebrates, when the pronephros degenerates into the mesonephros, the posterior pronephric tubule primordium develops the abdominal foramen and opens into the abdominal cavity. The subsequent pronephric duct splits longitudinally from front to back, separating into a hollow tube that connects to the cloaca. This is called the Müllerian duct, and in males its development eventually ceases, but in females it grows long and becomes the oviduct. The Müllerian duct in amphibians is simple, but in amniotes it differentiates into the oviduct, uterus, vagina, etc. It is named after JP Muller.

脊椎動物では前腎が退化して中腎に代る頃，後方の前腎細管原基は腹管孔を生じて腹腔に開口するようになる。これに続く前腎輸管は前後に縦裂し，分離して中空の管となって排出腔に連なる。これをミュラー管といい，雄ではやがて発生はやむが，雌では長く伸びて輸卵管になる。両生類のミュラー管は簡単であるが，羊膜類では輸卵管，子宮，腟などに分化する。名は J. P.ミュラーにちなむ。
