It is a mammal of the order Artiodactyla and the family Cervidae. It is found in western North America. Its ears are large and resemble those of a mule, hence the name. It is similar to the white-tailed deer, but larger. Its body length is 100-190 cm, shoulder height is 90-105 cm, and weight is 50-215 kg. Its antlers are divided into many branches and reach a length of 78 cm. Its coat color is reddish brown in summer, but dark brown in winter. The hair at the tip of its tail is black. It lives in forests, wastelands, and grasslands, and it sometimes appears on golf courses. Those that live in dry areas eat succulents. It is sometimes called the jumping deer because it jumps with all four legs together. It migrates seasonally, from the mountains in summer to the lowlands in winter, and can gather in large herds during the migration season. It goes into heat in the fall, and gives birth in May or June. Its gestation period is 182-200 days, and it usually gives birth to two babies.
