Udono [village] - Udono
A village in Minamimuro County, at the southernmost tip of Mie Prefecture. Population 4,798 (1995). Located on the north bank of the mouth of the Kumano River, it borders Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture across the river. To the east it faces the Kumano Nada Sea, with the sandy coast of Shichiri Mihama continuing from Kumano City. With an area of ​​3.11 km2, it is the smallest village in the prefecture. From the end of the Heian period to the Sengoku period, it was one of the bases for the Kumano Navy, and in the Edo period it flourished as a shipping port for lumber and mandarin oranges. Currently, it is home to lumber, pulp, and paper factories, and the new Udono Port has been built, so it has a strong industrial village character, with a large amount of industrial product shipped.

三重県最南端,南牟婁(みなみむろ)郡の村。人口4798(1995)。熊野川河口北岸に位置し,川を境に和歌山県新宮市に接する。東は熊野灘に面し,熊野市より続く七里御浜の砂浜海岸となっている。面積3.11km2は県下最小の村である。平安末期~戦国時代には熊野水軍の根拠地の一つで,江戸時代は木材やミカンの積出港として栄えた。現在は製材,パルプ,製紙などの工場が立地し,新鵜殿港も建設されて工業製品出荷額も多く,工業村の性格が強い。
