Symbol - Shocho

Japanese: 象徴 - しょうちょう
Symbol - Shocho
〘Noun〙 (Translation of symbol)① (━suru) To express something that is difficult to express in words, or an image, by replacing it with a concrete thing or a sensory word that recalls or evokes it. Also, the thing that is expressed. For example, a cross for Christianity, white for chastity, and a dove for peace. While a metaphor uses an analogy to express the relationship between similar concrete things that are easy to grasp, a symbol is used when comparing something abstract with a concrete thing. Symbol. ※Ishi Bigaku (1883-84) (translated by Nakae Chomin) 2 "Based solely on religious theory, it seeks to define a kind of symbol to represent the virtue of God." ② In philosophy, it generally refers to a symbol that represents something different by convention, not by causal relationship. [Glossary] A translation that was first used during the Meiji period. In "Tetsugaku Jibo" ( 1881 ), it is written as "Symbol 表号". Nakae Chomin was the first to translate the French word "symbol" as "symbol" in his "Ishi Aesthetics."
