This area was originally the site of the First Temple built by Solomon, and the Second Temple rebuilt after the Babylonian Captivity, and was also called Moriah. The eastern, southern, and western walls surrounding the Haram al-Sharīf are thought to date back to the time of King Herod, but the western wall (Ha-Kotel Hamarawī) is thought to contain remains of the First Temple, and in modern times Jews have come to attach special importance to this wall as the Western Wall. …
