A notorious 18th-century British society. It met in an abandoned monastery and is said to have been devoted to black magic and lewd orgies. Its founder, Lord Dashwood (1704-1781), inherited what was then the largest fortune of his time from his father, a wealthy merchant. From the late 1750s, he presided over a club that included members of the British royal family, including the Prince of Wales, the famous playboy Earl of Sandwich, politicians such as the Mayor of London J. Wilkes, and even B. Franklin.

18世紀イギリスの悪名高い結社。廃虚の僧院を集会所とし，黒魔術や猥雑な狂宴に熱中したといわれる。創設者ダッシュウッド卿Francis Dashwood(1704‐81)は富裕な商人であった父から当時随一と呼ばれた莫大な財産を相続し，皇太子を含む英国王室関係者，有名な道楽者サンドウィッチ伯爵，ロンドン市長J.ウィルクスをはじめとする政治家，さらにB.フランクリンらを会員に擁するクラブを1750年代後半からほぼ20年間にわたって主宰した。
