Year of death: 1864.7.8 (Genji 1.6.5) Year of birth: Bunsei 3.4 (1820) A sonno joi (revere the expulsion of soldiers) patriot in the late Edo period. His given name was Masumi, his pen name was Tajo, and Teizo was his nickname. He was the eldest son of Miyabe Shungo, a doctor from Nishiuenomura, Kamimashiki District, Higo Province (Mifune Town, Kamimashiki District, Kumamoto Prefecture). He studied Yamaga-ryu martial arts under his uncle Masumi, and in 1849 he succeeded him as the Higo Domain's martial arts instructor. It was around this time that he formed a friendship with Yoshida Shoin, who would later be described as "a man of great devotion and fortitude." He also studied the national scriptures under Hayashi Soen. In 1856, when Perry arrived in Edo, he went there, but returned to his domain due to his involvement in Shoin's failed attempt to travel to America. In 1856, he was found guilty of a brawl involving his disciples, and retired to his hometown. In 1863, he was appointed commander of 3,000 soldiers selected from various domains throughout Japan, but was defeated in the August 18th Coup and retreated to Choshu with Sanjo Sanetomi and seven other nobles. During his stay in Choshu, in a letter to his wife Emi, he wrote, "I have learned to do needlework by hand, and I can't help but think how fat Mitsu must be." His fatherly love for his two young daughters is apparent. In 1864, he secretly entered Kyoto, and while meeting with his comrades, he was attacked by the Shinsengumi (the Ikedaya Incident) and committed suicide. <References> Miyabe Teizo Sensei and the Martyrs' Biography (Jun Misawa) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
