Roji (alley) - Roji

Japanese: 露地(路地) - ろじ

It is also written as roji and pronounced as roji. It means an uncovered land or ground. It also means a narrow road between houses, a narrow passageway within a property, but it means an indoor dirt floor in Minamikoma District, Yamanashi Prefecture, Kitashitara District, Aichi Prefecture, and Hida, a garden in a house in the Hokuriku, Hokushin, and Ou regions, a garden inside a townhouse in Kyoto, a garden in the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions, a back gate in a house in Osaka Prefecture, Wakayama Prefecture, and Kagawa Prefecture, and a back alley at the back of an alley in the Kansai region. On the other hand, in the tea ceremony, the passageway leading to the tea room (zashiki) is called roji even after it has been developed as a garden.

路次とも書き，〈ろうじ〉とも発音する。おおいのない土地･地面のこと。また家と家との間の狭い道，敷地内に設けられた狭い通路，のことであるが，山梨県南巨摩郡，愛知県北設楽郡，飛驒の民家では屋内の土間，北陸，北信，奥羽地方の民家では庭，京都では町屋内の庭園，東北･北陸地方では庭園，大阪府，和歌山県，香川県の民家では裏木戸門，関西地方で路地の奥にある裏長屋を意味する。いっぽう茶道では茶室(座敷)に至る通路が，庭園として整備されたのちも露地と呼ばれる。
