This was a small theater located behind Asakusa Park in Tokyo. It first opened in 1887 under the name Azuma-za. It was renamed Miyato-za in 1896, and after Yamakawa Kintaro became its owner, business improved and it became a leading small theater. Its heyday was from the end of the Meiji period to the Taisho period, when famous actors such as Sawamura Gennosuke IV and Onoe Taganojo III played active roles. It was destroyed by fire in the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, and reopened in a temporary shed on December 31 of the same year. The full building was completed and restored in 1928, but it closed in February 1937 due to the changing times, when movies, light comedy, and revues were on the rise.
