A floating structure for inspecting and repairing ships. It is called a floating dock because it floats on the sea, unlike a dry dock on land. Its cross section is concave-shaped with both ends open and it consists of many compartmented pontoons and side walls. Water is poured into the pontoons, which are then lowered, a ship is brought in and secured to the slipway, and the water is then drained, causing the ship to float up. Compared to dry docks, it has the advantage of not requiring a lot of space and being mobile, but it requires deep water and high maintenance costs, including the use of on-shore facilities, the transportation of equipment, and the movement of personnel. Some docks have a capacity of tens of thousands of tons. → Related Items Dock Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
