Floating Dock - Uki Dock

Japanese: 浮きドック - うきドック

A floating structure for inspecting and repairing ships. It is called a floating dock because it floats on the sea, unlike a dry dock on land. Its cross section is concave-shaped with both ends open and it consists of many compartmented pontoons and side walls. Water is poured into the pontoons, which are then lowered, a ship is brought in and secured to the slipway, and the water is then drained, causing the ship to float up. Compared to dry docks, it has the advantage of not requiring a lot of space and being mobile, but it requires deep water and high maintenance costs, including the use of on-shore facilities, the transportation of equipment, and the movement of personnel. Some docks have a capacity of tens of thousands of tons.

船舶の検査・修理のための浮体構造物。陸上の乾ドックに対して海上に浮かぶので浮きドックという。横断面は凹字形で両端は開放され，多数に区画したポンツーンと側壁からなる。ポンツーンに注水，沈下させ船を導入して船台に固定したのち排水すれば船ごと浮上する。乾ドックに比べ敷地を要せず，移動可能などの利点があるが，水深が深いことを必要とし，陸上設備の利用，機材の搬入，人員の往来など維持費も高い。数万トンの容量のものまである。
