A town in Shimoniikawa County in the northeastern part of Toyama Prefecture. It occupies an alluvial fan on the right bank of the downstream Kurobe River, facing the Sea of Japan. The central settlement developed as a semi-agricultural, semi-mercantile town along the Hokuriku Kaido, and is served by the Ainokaze Toyama Railway. Rice cultivation, particularly of Koshihikari rice, is thriving. The fishing industry is centered on coastal fishing, mainly using fixed nets. Companies making textiles, automobile parts, electronic parts, and other products are located here. 71.25 km2 .
