An old town in Kurate County in northern Fukuoka Prefecture. It occupies hilly land in the Inunaki River basin, a tributary of the Onga River. Since the opening of the Kaijima coal mine in 1884, it has rapidly developed as a coal mining town. In 1955, it became the town with the largest population in Japan (55,000 people). Since then, due to the coal recession, many mines have been closed, and in recent years automobile factories and other businesses have moved into the industrial park. In February 2006, it merged with Wakamiya Town in Kurate County to become a city, called Miyawaka City. 52.49 km2 . Population 21,488 (2003).
