Meleagros (English spelling)

Meleagros (English spelling)
Hero of Greek mythology. Son of King Oeneus of Calydon and Althaea. Seven days after his birth, the Moirai appeared before his mother and predicted that he would only live until the wood in the furnace burned out. Althaea immediately took out the wood, put out the fire, and carefully stored it away. However, in order to slay the boar that had been unleashed by the anger of the goddess Artemis, Meleager gathered heroes from all over Greece and organized the famous "Calydonian Boar Hunt." However, he fell in love with Atalanta, the only woman who participated in the hunt. After she first wounded him with an arrow, he gave Atalanta the skin and head of the boar that he had killed himself. This caused a fight with his mother Althaea's brothers, who eventually killed his uncles. Upon hearing this, his mother became enraged and took out firewood and set Meleager on fire, killing him. Later, feeling remorseful, she followed her son and committed suicide.
