A city in the eastern part of Iwate Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1941. It faces Miyako Bay and is located in the middle of the Sanriku Coast to the east, with the Omoe Peninsula protruding from it. It occupies the lower reaches of the Hei River and Tsugaruishi River. The Yamada Line runs through the city, and the Sanriku Railway Kita-Rias Line branches off into it. The city has developed around Miyako Port, an important port with a 40,000-ton wharf. Pacific saury fishing, salmon and trout deep-sea fishing, and seafood processing are thriving, and there are also firebrick, fertilizer, and metal product factories. The Tsugaruishi River produces southern nose-bending salmon. It is home to Jodogahama Beach, Todogasaki, and Masaki, and is also the center of sightseeing in Sanriku Reconstruction National Park. In June 2005, it incorporated Taro Town and Niisato Village of Shimohei District, and in January 2010, Kawai Village of Shimohei District. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 岩手県東部の市。1941年市制。宮古湾に面し,東は三陸海岸中部に当たり,重茂(おもえ)半島が突出。閉伊(へい)川,津軽石川などの下流域を占める。山田線が通じ,三陸鉄道北リアス線が分岐する市街は4万トン岸壁をもつ重要港湾宮古港を中心に発達。サンマ漁,サケ・マス遠洋漁業,水産加工が盛んで,耐火煉瓦・肥料・金属製品工場もある。津軽石川は南部鼻曲りサケを産する。浄土ヶ浜,【とど】ヶ崎(とどがさき),真崎があり,三陸復興国立公園探勝の中心でもある。2005年6月下閉伊郡田老町,新里村を,2010年1月下閉伊郡川井村を編入。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。1259.15km2。5万9430人(2010)。
