A city in the southern part of Kumamoto Prefecture. Incorporated as a city in 1942, it occupies the mountainous area from the west to the south of the Hitoyoshi Basin. The city center developed as a castle town and a river port on the Kuma River, and is served by the Hisatsu Line and Kyushu Expressway, with the Kuma River Railway branching off from the city. It is a distribution center for timber, tea, shiitake mushrooms, and other crops, and lumber and agricultural processing are carried out there. In recent years, electrical machinery factories have also moved in. Kuma shochu is a specialty of the city. Hitoyoshi Onsen, which has over 30 hot springs along the Kuma River, is also the departure point for boats cruising down the Kuma River. It is known as one of the places in Japan where heavy fog occurs. 210.55 km2 .
