Minamoto no Yoshichika

Japanese:
Minamoto no Yoshichika
Year of death: Tennin 1.1.6 (1108.2.19)
Year of birth: Unknown. A warrior of the late Heian period. Second son of Minamoto Yoshiie. His mother was the daughter of Minamoto Takanaga. He was appointed as the governor of Tsushima after serving as Sahyoe no jo, but with the support of Higo no Kami Takashina Motozane and others, he rampaged through the nine provinces of Chinzei and committed acts of debauchery, such as refusing to follow orders from Dazaifu. In July of the third year of the Kowa era (1101), the Imperial Court responded by issuing an official order to pursue Yoshichika. Meanwhile, Yoshiie's father, Sudo Sukemichi, a trusted retainer, was sent to Chinzei to summon Yoshichika, but Sukemichi instead sided with Yoshichika and killed the official envoy sent to pursue him, making the situation even more complicated. In December of the following year (1104), Yoshichika was exiled to Oki, but in 1107, he crossed over from Oki to Izumo on the opposite shore, killed the provincial governor's deputy and his seven retainers, and seized tribute (official property). As some residents of nearby provinces were also in favor of this, the Imperial Court appointed Taira Masamori, the Inaba no Kami of the Ise Heike clan, to pursue and kill them. In January of the following year, Tennin 1, Masamori defeated Yoshichika in battle and returned in triumph to Kyoto bearing Yoshichika's head. However, doubts arose as to whether the head was actually Yoshichika's, and rumors that Yoshichika was still alive and people claiming to be Yoshichika continued to appear. He can be said to be a figure who symbolizes the decline of the Minamoto clan and the rise of the Heike clan during the Insei period. <References> Takahashi Masaaki, Before Kiyomori; Yasuda Motohisa, Minamoto no Yoshiie
