Son of Chichibu Shigehiro. He was originally a Taira ally, and later a retainer of Minamoto no Yoritomo. His base was Oyamada Manor in Musashi (Tokyo). In 1184, under Yoritomo's orders, he and his son Inage Shigenari ambush Ichijo Tadayori at a drinking party. He was commonly known as Oyamada Betto.
