Since 1946, research by M. Calvin and others has confirmed that the carbon dioxide fixation pathway in photosynthesis in many plants is the Calvin cycle (reduced pentose cycle). However, in 1965, HP Kortschak revealed that carbon dioxide fixation in sugarcane is carried out via the _C4 dicarboxylic acid cycle (Hatch-Slack cycle), and it has since been confirmed that there are approximately 200 other species of herbaceous plants that fix carbon dioxide using this cycle. Plants that fix carbon dioxide via the _C4 dicarboxylic acid cycle have malic acid and aspartic acid as their initial products, and are called _C4 plants due to their carbon numbers.

多くの植物の光合成における炭酸固定経路がカルビン回路(還元型ペントース回路)であることは1946年以来，M.カルビンらの研究によって確認された。ところが65年にコーチャックH.P.Kortschakはサトウキビでは炭酸固定がC₄ジカルボン酸回路(ハッチ=スラック回路)によって行われることを明らかにし，その後，このほかにも200種ほどの草本でこの回路による炭酸固定を行うものがあることを確かめられた。C₄ジカルボン酸回路によって炭酸固定を行う植物は，その初期産物がリンゴ酸，アスパラギン酸であり，これらの炭素数から，C₄植物と呼ばれている。
