Minamidaito Island

Located 360 km east of the main island of Okinawa, it is one of the Daito Islands (formerly Ufuagarijima) and belongs to Minamidaito Village. It has an area of ​​30.57 square kilometers, and is made entirely of Ryukyu limestone, with a highest point of 75.1 meters. The center of the island is lower than the periphery, forming a basin-like topography, and it is world-famous as a typical uplifted atoll island along with the neighboring Kitadaito Island. It was first developed in 1900 (Meiji 33) by Tamaoki Han'emon (1838-1910), who was from Hachijo Island, and is now a sugarcane monoculture area. There is a colony of Brugui in Oike Pond, and Daito flying foxes (both nationally designated natural monuments) live here. Population 1,269 (2009).

沖縄本島の東方360キロメートルに位置し、大東諸島（古くはウフアガリジマ）の一つで南大東村に属す。面積30.57平方キロメートルで、全島が琉球(りゅうきゅう)石灰岩からなり、最高点75.1メートルの低島。島の中央部が周縁部より低くなり盆地状の地形を呈し、隣接する北大東島とともに典型的な隆起環礁の島として世界的に有名である。1900年（明治33）に、八丈島出身の玉置半右衛門(たまおきはんえもん)（1838―1910）によって初めて開拓された島で、サトウキビの単作地となっている。大池のオヒルギ群落があり、ダイトウオオコウモリ（ともに国指定天然記念物）が生息する。人口1269（2009）。
