Located 360 km east of the main island of Okinawa, it is one of the Daito Islands (formerly Ufuagarijima) and belongs to Minamidaito Village. It has an area of 30.57 square kilometers, and is made entirely of Ryukyu limestone, with a highest point of 75.1 meters. The center of the island is lower than the periphery, forming a basin-like topography, and it is world-famous as a typical uplifted atoll island along with the neighboring Kitadaito Island. It was first developed in 1900 (Meiji 33) by Tamaoki Han'emon (1838-1910), who was from Hachijo Island, and is now a sugarcane monoculture area. There is a colony of Brugui in Oike Pond, and Daito flying foxes (both nationally designated natural monuments) live here. Population 1,269 (2009).
