Teatro alla Scala

Japanese: スカラ座 - すからざ(英語表記)Teatro alla Scala
Teatro alla Scala

Milan's leading opera house. It was named after the church of St. Maria alla Scala, which was built on the site of the church. It opened on August 3, 1778 with an opera by Salieri, and since then, many excellent operas have premiered here, including Rossini's "Turk in Italy," Bellini's "Norma," Verdi's "Otello" and "Falstaff," Boito's "Mefistofele," and Poulenc's "Dialogues of the Carmelites." Toscanini, De Sabata, Luciano Chailly, Giulini, Serafin, Abbado, and other outstanding musicians from past and present have served as artistic and musical directors. The current building was rebuilt between 1946 and 1948 after being severely damaged by bombing in 1943 during World War II, and has a seating capacity of 3,600. In 1955, a small theater called Piccola Scala (seats 600) was added for the performance of older works and contemporary music. With its own orchestra and choir, the orchestra performs in nearby cities and overseas in addition to a season that begins in December. The attached museum has been open since 1913. It first came to Japan in 1981 (Showa 56).
