Romance novel - Engi tai shosetsu

Japanese: 演義体小説 - えんぎたいしょうせつ

A full-length historical novel written in the mid- to late Edo period, modelled on Chinese romantic novels. Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a novel written in colloquial language, embellishing historical facts in a literary way. It is said to have started during the Southern Song Dynasty, when court lecturers lectured on historical texts. In Japan, it was accepted as a military tale, and translations such as the Popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms (1690) were attempted, but it was not until the emergence of Tang dynasty scholars such as Okajima Kanzan that it began to be read in earnest. In particular, the interpretation of the Popular Chungyi Suikoden had a major impact on the world of Japanese novels.

中国の演義小説にならって書かれた，江戸中･後期の長編の歴史小説。演義小説とは，《三国志演義》のように，史実を文学的に潤色し，俗語を用いて書いた小説をいう。南宋のころ，宮廷抱えの講釈師が史書を進講したのが始まりであるとされている。日本には軍談物の概念で受けいれられ，《通俗三国志》(1690)のごとき翻訳も試みられたが，本格的に読まれるようになったのは岡島冠山ら唐話学者出現以後のことで，とくに《通俗忠義水滸伝》の読解は，日本の小説界に大きな影響を与えることになった。
