A town in Aso County in northern Kumamoto Prefecture. It occupies the northern slope of Mt. Aso's outer rim and the western slope of the Kuju mountain range. National Route 212 runs through the Oguni Basin, and Akambaba is the main settlement. The area is filled with beautiful Oguni cedar forests, and lumber, vegetable, shiitake mushroom and tobacco cultivation, and livestock farming are thriving. Manganji Onsen (sulfur-containing salt spring, 33°C) and Kurokawa Onsen are national health resort hot springs. Area: 115.90 km2 . Population: 4,429 (2010).
