A city in central Tokyo. It was incorporated as a city in 1971. It was originally a farming area in the Tama Hills on the south bank of the Tama River, but in the 1970s people started moving into Tama New Town and residential development progressed. Initially, the only railroad in the area was the Keio Teito (now Keio Electric Railway) Keio Line in the north, but in 1974-1975 the Odakyu Tama Line and Keio Sagamihara Line were extended to the city center, greatly improving access to the city center. The former Tama Seiseki Memorial Hall is located in Sakuragaoka Park. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 21.01 km2 . 147,648 people (2010). 東京都中部の市。1971年市制。多摩川南岸の多摩丘陵にある農村地帯であったが,1970年代から多摩ニュータウンへの入居が始まり,宅地化が進んだ。当初鉄道は北部の京王帝都(現,京王電鉄)京王線のみであったが,1974年―1975年に小田急多摩線,京王相模原線が市の中心部まで通じて都心への便が大幅に改善された。都立桜ヶ丘公園に旧多摩聖蹟記念館がある。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。21.01km2。14万7648人(2010)。
