A town in Kamo District, Shizuoka Prefecture, at the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula. A tourist town centered around Shimokamo Onsen (salt spring, gypsum spring, 82-125°C), the town is home to the Shimokamo Tropical Botanical Garden and the University of Tokyo's Arboricultural Research Institute, which use the hot springs. Melon and persimmon greenhouse cultivation using the hot spring heat is also popular. There are many tourist and health resorts in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, including Cape Irozaki at the southernmost tip, Cape Hagachizaki on the west coast, and Mera. There is a bus service from Shimoda City. 109.94 ^km2 . 9,516 people (2010).
