They are descendants of Michitaka, the son of Kaneie of the Northern House of the Fujiwara clan. In other words, their ancestor was Michitaka's descendant Chunagon Chikanobu (1137-97). Chikanobu's son Chikane, and Chikane's son Nobunari were favorites of the retired Emperor Gotoba, and Chikane became a monk after the retired Emperor after the Jokyu War, and Nobunari also became a monk after the death of the retired Emperor. Nobunari's son Chikanari lived on the site of the Minase Imperial Villa that was given to him by the retired Emperor, and built a Goei-do Hall there to worship the spirit of the retired Emperor, and from then on the family was called Minase. Next, Chikanari's son Yoshichika served the Imperial Court, and in the Muromachi period, after Shigechika's death, he had no children, so Suekane, the son of Sanjo Kinfuyu, took over the family name.
