Tussakura - Tussakura

Japanese: フサザクラ - ふさざくら
Tussakura - Tussakura

A deciduous tall tree of the family Prunaceae (APG classification: Prunaceae). The trunk is upright and can reach a height of 8 meters. The leaves are alternate with long petioles, oblate or broadly ovate, about 10 cm wide, with a pointed tip and irregular sharp serrations on the edges. In early spring, hermaphrodite flowers grow in clusters at the tops of short branches. The pedicels are short and have no perianth. The stamens are numerous with short filaments, and the anthers are linear and dark red. The pistils are composed of numerous free carpels, each ovary has a stalk, and the overall shape is clustered, hence the name. The fruits are also clustered, with flattened wings at the end of thin stalks. They grow on mountain riverbanks and are distributed from Honshu to Kyushu.

The family Prunellaceae is a unique plant with only one genus and two species found in the Himalayas, China, and Japan, and its related relationships are unknown.

It is also classified as a member of the Prunella family in the APG classification.
