Missing link

Missing link
Also called a "missing link." Generally, it refers to a missing part in a complete system. C. Darwin is well known for saying, "A fossil link in the chain connecting man and apes is missing" (The Origin of Man, 1871). German biologist EH Haeckel applied Darwin's evolutionary thinking to the natural classification of organisms, and replaced the horizontal relationship of organisms' affinity with a vertical relationship over time, believing that organisms that are more distantly related to each other diverged in earlier times.
