Guttmann, L.

...The reason why physical activity, which was often introduced as a supplementary method of medical treatment, has been elevated to a sport enjoyed by disabled people as a shared culture of humanity is thought to be due to the change in the structure of diseases accompanying medical advances, i.e., the increase in chronic diseases and disabled people due to the sharp decline in deaths, and the change in thinking about this fact, i.e., the respect for human dignity and how to respond to it, focusing on how to best utilize remaining abilities. A contributor to the development of sports for the disabled was the British L. Guttmann (1899-1980). On the opening day of the 14th London Olympic Games in 1948, he held an archery tournament at Stoke Mandeville Hospital on the outskirts of London, with the participation of 16 wheelchair-using paraplegics due to spinal cord injuries sustained in the war. In 1952, participants from the Netherlands were added to this tournament, making it an international tournament (International Stoke Mandeville Games, ISMG), and it has now developed into the International Stoke Mandeville Wheelchair Sports Federation (ISMWSF). ...

In 1952, the participation of the Dutch team made it an international competition. …
