E Region - E Region

...The D region is strongly affected by abnormal ionization caused by flares (the Dellinger phenomenon) and by abnormal ionization caused by solar cosmic rays and auroral particles (ionospheric storms). The E region is located at an altitude of about 90 to 130 km, and the main sources of ionization are solar X-rays (100 to 10 Å) and ultraviolet rays (1027 to 800 Å). The E layer, which has a peak in electron density at an altitude of about 100 km, is formed in the sunlit hemisphere.
