Nanak - Nanak (English spelling)

A medieval Indian religious leader. The founder of Sikhism, which united Hinduism and Islam. Born as the son of a small farmer near Lahore, the capital of the Punjab region. Heavily influenced by Kabir and others, he became a monk at the age of 30 and traveled around the country with fellow countryman and bard Bhai Mardana (1459-1534) and two Hindu farmers, preaching the oneness and immanence of God in poetry. His morning hymn, called "Japji," is included, along with other poems by him, in the Granth Sahib, the fundamental Sikh scripture.

中世インドの宗教家。ヒンドゥー教とイスラム教を統合したシク教の開祖。パンジャーブ地方の中心都市ラホール近郊に小農の子として生まれた。カビールなどから大きな影響を受け、30歳のとき出家、同郷の吟遊詩人マルダーナBhai Mardana（1459―1534）と2人のヒンドゥー教の農夫とともに諸国を巡歴し、神の唯一性、内在性を詩の形で説いた。彼の朝の賛歌は『ジャプジー』といわれ、他の彼の詩とともに、シク教の根本聖典『グラント・サーヒブ』に収められている。
