Misono

Japanese:
Misono
From ancient times to the Middle Ages, this was a territory established to procure food and medicinal herbs for the imperial family. It was also written as "Mison". Under the ancient Ritsuryo system, gardens were attached to the Enchishi of the Imperial Household Ministry, and medicinal gardens were attached to the Tenyakuryo, where vegetables, fruit trees, medicinal herbs, etc. were cultivated. In 896, the Enchishi became a branch of the Naizenshi. Many of the Misono that were under the Naizenshi came under the jurisdiction of the Mizushidokoro in the 11th century, and instead of being directly managed by the central government, kugonin (officers) who were given free land and lay houses began to provide offerings through trade and other means. As a result, many of the Misono became manors, and some were passed down as land of the Uchinoryo. From the 11th century onwards, important shrines such as Ise Shrine and the regent families also had their own misono, and the misono of Ise Shrine in particular, along with the mikuriya, formed the centre of their territories.
