A perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family (APG classification: Cyperaceae). It grows to a height of about 1 to 1.5 meters. The stem is triangular, globular at the base, and has long underground runners. A corymb-like inflorescence grows at the end of the stem. There are a dozen or so spikelets, each 1 to 2 centimeters long and brown. It grows in colonies in sunny marshes and shallow waters throughout Japan. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the withered stem resembles the shaft of a bow and arrow, which floats on the water. It is also found in Korea, China, and North America.
